---

When she was born, Marilyn Monroe’s name was Norma Jean Baker. Her early life was a nightmare. She lived with a number of different people, who often mistreated her.

At age sixteen, she got married to a sailor. But soon she ended the marriage. She then changed the color of her hair from brown to blond. She also changed her name to Marilyn Monroe.

She wanted to become an actress, and eventually she was successful in this ambition. At the end of her career she had appeared in a number of Hollywood films. And at the age of twenty-six, she had become very famous as an actress.

Why is the public so interested even now in an actress who died so many years ago? There are many reasons, among them her exciting but tragic life, her connections with many famous people, and her image as a woman of exceptional sexual desirability.

In the years between 1950 and 1963, for many Americans sex was an absolute taboo, and many condemned people who were especially attractive sexually.

Marilyn Monroe started her career in this puritanical atmosphere. As a movie critic once said, Marilyn Monroe’s body had perfect curves in all the right places for a sexy woman of the time. When she walked, she moved her body with a sexiness that inspired sentiments of great admiration among many and of hatred among puritanic Americans who feared or hated sex. Her voice was also like the voices of the sirens who seduced Jason and his argonauts.

Marilyn Monroe’s story starts on June 1, 1926, when she was born in Los Angeles, California. In her childhood, she lived in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, very close to Hollywood.

Her mother, Gladys Baker, had psychiatric problems. She often had to be treated in a hospital for patients with psychological illnesses, and Marilyn had to live with a variety of families that she did not know and who often mistreated her.

To escape from the circumstances of her life, she went to the movies. After seeing a film, she imitated what many of the actors of these films did. She narrated the details of this part of her life to a friend, Ted Jordan, who later wrote a book about her life.

At age seventeen, Marilyn was able to engage the services of an agent who persuaded Twentieth Century Fox to include her in some of the films that it produced.

A little like Miacheal Jackson, Marilyn used the services of a plastic surgeon to modify her appearance. She changed the form of her nose a little and gave her eyes a much bigger look.

Though she did a lot to change her physical appearance, she did not work a great deal to develop her capabilities as an actress, and some officials at Twentieth Century Fox did not like her and fired her after the first film that she made for that studio.

But Marilyn continued to pursue her ambitions to become an actress, and she then appeared in a film called “Ladies of the Chorus.” She sang two songs in this film. Several critics liked her, but Columbia fired her.

Marilyn continued her fight. She then appeared in a film called “Love Happy.” It was a comedy with the famous Marx Brothers. The critics said that “Love Happy” was not among the best films by the Marx Brothers, but Marilyn became famous when she walked briefly in the film.

In “Love Happy” Marilyn had to say “Some men are following me.” Though Groucho said that he did not know why, his eyes opened very wide when he saw her walk. Because of this brief scene, Marilyn became famous.

Marilyn got her next opportunity in Hollywood when the director John Huston invited her to appear in “The Asphalt Jungle.” In this film, she was the friend of a criminal, and Huston admired her work in the film.

Because of this success, Twentieth Century Fox finally hired her. She then appeared in “All About Eve,” which appeared before the public in 1950. In this film Marilyn was a blond women without a lot of intelligence, a Hollywood stereotype that became well established with the career of Jean Harlow, the original “dumb blonde.”

In 1952 Marilyn appeared as a dumb blonde in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”; and because of this film Marilyn became, along with people like James Dean, Clark Gable, and Gary Cooper, one of the principal stars of Hollywood.

Her career now was characterized by a lot of success in films like “How to Marry a Millionaire,” “The Seven Year Itch,” Bus Stop,” and “Some Like It Hot.” In “Some Like It Hot” Marilyn showed considerable talents as a comedienne.

Though life should have been sweet for Marilyn, she was not happy. She was wanted only because she seemed to be the perfect dumb blonde, but she wanted to become a serious actress. Hollywood studio officials and her public, however, saw her only as “the blonde bombshell.”

After her first marriage with the sailor, she got married to two other men, Joe Dimaggio, of the New York Yankees, and the dramatist Arthur Miller. Her marriage to Joe Dimaggio lasted only a few months. Her marriage to Arthur Miller lasted five years, but it ended in divorce.

Marilyn returned to Hollywood, but she had a lot of difficulty with her career. She drank a lot of alcohol and gained a lot of weight. She also did not learn the dialogues of the parts that she had in her films, and she often arrived late at the studio when she made her films, costing the studio a lot of money.

In 1962 Marilyn was going to appear in the film “Something’s Got to Give.” Though she had lost weight for the film and put forth a lot of effort to learn her lines, she got sick on several occasions, and officials at Twentieth Century Fox fired her.

On August 4, 1962, Marilyn Monroe died alone in her house. She was thirty-six years old. According to many reports, she died because of the many illicit drugs that she took. But the people who knew her said that her failed marriage and the failure of her last film also contributed to her death.

Many believe that Marilyn never was able to escape from the sad life of her childhood. Despite her success in Hollywood, she continued to be the poor neglected kid of her childhood, Norma Jean, and finally the burden of her childhood caused her failure and her death.
