“Tu” e “vos” in le germano contemporanee

(Languages of this post: Interlingua, German, English)

Ecce unes responsas:

...

Pueros e teenagers usa "tu", e nemo trova stranie iste practica.

(Christian A, 18)

(Kerstin A. 14)

...

(Christian A., 18 Jahre)

Was sollte ich tun. (Kerstin A., 14 Jahre)

...

"Du" and "Sie" and Contemporary German.

Language and Culture--what is the influence they have on each other? Culture is in language, it is said. Or language has something to do with culture. But what? Perhaps a language is a museum of culture in which many cultural characteristics can be observed.

One example of the mutual influence of language and culture is the use of "du" and "Sie" in contemporary German. These two words are used to distinguish between familiarity and distance. Familiarity is reserved for family and a small number of friends; distance is for other people. People use "du" with their friends and talk to them with their first names. They use "Sie" with the many others they know and use their last names in convesation. "Sie" implies a certain formality and creates a certain psychological distance.

An exception was the use of "du" in certain well-defined groups. Thus soldiers, for example, used "du," as well as students, when they were members of a close-knit group.

At times there could be painful moments within this complex of rules. If people ran into some new relatives that they had never seen, for example, then they were to immediately start using "du." Or if a member of a family got married, everyone was obligated to immediately use "du" with everyone else--an uncomfortable practice for some people. But that's the way things were. The rule said that family members had to use "du."

About fifty, even twenty years ago, there were rather clear rules about when people should use either "du" or "Sie." And nobody had ambitions for changing these rules. A few years ago these well defined rules started to change. Perhaps the generation gap has been one of the causes. The younger generation is in a rather constant conflict with older people, and they have developed strong feelings of solidarity among themselves.

While other students used to use "du" only with people they were friends with, today almost all students immediately start using "du" with one another. Earlier it was unthinkable that a student would use "du" with a teacher. Today some younger teachers let their students use "du" with them. There are even people who believe that the use of "Sie" should be completely stopped.

A short time ago the well-known German newspaper "Die Zeit" invited their young readers (under twenty years old) to participate in a discussion about the use of "du" and "Sie." Here are some responses:

...

Children and teenagers use "du," and nobody finds that strange. Of course it is quite natural for older people to use "Sie." Why? Politeness and respect play a role here. When grownups use "Sie," either they haven't known one another for very long or they want to maintain a certain distance. Isn't the use of "Sie" more difficult? With "du" it would be easier to establish contact and to speak more openly about problems (Doris S., 17)

"Du or "Sie"? That's a hard question. Is it really possible to use "du" with everyone? I don't think so. For that would be an unbearable break in language and thought traditions for many people. So I myself use both forms together. I use both first names and the "Sie" form. In the office everything is less formal and stiff but at the same time a little distant. (Christian A., 18)

I find that "du" is much better than "Sie." If people are frightened of teachers and can use "du" with them, they feel a greater sense of confidence. But unfortunately there are people who are against using "du." They think the children will start to lord it over them. (Martina H., 13)

I'm for the use of "du." I have used it before and everyone is comfortable with it. I'm now eleven, and it is very complicated to determine the people you must use "Sie" with. (Patrick W., 11)

Near us lives a married couple. Both of them have told me to use "du" with them. But when I told my mother, she said, "That's impolite, for they are grownups, and you should use 'Sie' with them." I don't understand that at all. What should I do? Perhaps my neighbors will be unhappy if I use "Sie" with them again. And if I use "du" with them, my mother gets mad. (Kerstin A. 14)

...

These opinions show very clearly that the use of "du" and "Sie" depend on a large and complicated collection of cultural details. They include considerations of distance, respect, courtesy, friendship, confidence, etc. For many these ideas are incredibly important. They embody speech and thought traditions that should never be broken.

Up to now it hasn't been completely clear whether such a break is coming. It is clear, however, that a generation with new feelings for life wants to express these feelings in its use of language. And thus it is also clear that language, thought, and feelings; that language and behavior; that language and culture cannot be separated. And these special relationships have to be actively experienced in the process of using language. They cannot be translated from one language to another.

Ce qui manque a la langue angliaise est un pluriel de you (i.e. vos). On est forcé a dire des choses assez vulgaire comme "you lot" ou, en Australie, "you mob".

Quel quantité énorme d'articles vous avez écrits. Que vous est fleissig!
