Iudith e Holoferne

Tunc vadeva Vagao a Judith et diceva, "Non time, bon puella. Vade a mi domino. Ille te honorara e tu mangiara con ille, et tu bibera vino in gaudimento."

E Holoferne diceva a illa, "Bibe alique nunc e reposa te, proque io te estima multo."

Erant autem omnes fatigatissimi a vino; eratque Iudith sola in cubiculo. Porro Holofernes iacebat in lecto, nimia ebrietate sopitus.

Apprehendit comam capitis eius dicens "Confirma me, Domine Deus, in hac hora necessitatis meae."

Judith and Holofernes

On the fourth day Holofernes made dinner for his servants, and said to Vagao, his eunuch: "Go and persuade that Hebrew woman to live with me voluntarily. For it is dishonorable among the Assyrians if a woman makes fun of a man and goes away from him unharmed.

Then Vagao went in to Judith and said: "Don't be afraid, my dear girl. Go see my master. He will honor you and you will eat with him, and you will enjoy drinking some wine with him."

Judith responded to him, "You don't want me to contradict my master, do you? I will do everything that is best for him to see. Whatever he likes will be the greatest thing for me for the rest of the days of my life.

And she arose and adorned herself with her clothing; and, after going to him, stood in front of him. Holofernes' heart was stricken, and he found himself lusting after her.

And Holofernes said to her, "Have something to drink and relax. I really think a great deal of you."

And Judith said, "I will drink, master, because today my spirit is elated more than it ever has been in my life." And she ate, and drank in front of him what her servant girl had prepared for her.

Holofernes became very happy and drank too much, more than he had ever drunk in his entire life.

But when it was very late, his servants went to their quarters, and Vagao closed the doors to Holofernes's room and went away. Everyone was very tired because of the wine, and Judith remained alone in the room. Holofernes was lying in bed asleep because of his excessive drinking.

Judith stood in front of the bed, praying tearfully and moving her lips in silence, saying, "Strengthen me, O Lord, the God of Israel, and look upon the works of my hands in this hour and just as you promised, raise up Jerusalem, your city; and I will do this, believing it could be done through you."

And when she had said these things, she went to the column at the head of his bed and untied Holofernes' dagger. She seized the hair on his head and said, "Strengthen me, O Lord God, in this, my hour of need."

She she struck at his neck twice and cut off his head.
