Conversation inter Antronio, un abbate incredibilemente stupide, e Magdala, un femina instruite

ANTRONIUS: Libre adimunt multum cerebri a feminis.

MAGDALA: Quantum cerebri habes, nescio; certe ego quantulumcumque habeo, malim in bonis studiis consumere, quam in pernoctibus conviviis in exhauriendis capacibus pateris.

ANTRONIUS: Ego sane nolo uxorem doctam.

MAGDALA: At ego gaudeo, quia habeo maritum tui dissimilem. Nam, quia erudita sum, magis me amat ille, quem ego quoque amo propter eruditionem.

Nonne legebant sacros libros?

ANTRONIUS: Verum istum nunc rarum est.

MAGDALA: Sic olim rara avis fuit abbas indoctus; nunc nihil es vulgatius. Cavete igitur! Praesidebimus in scholis theologicis; orabimus in templis!

Conversation between Antronius, an incredibly stupid abbot, and Magdala, an educated woman

ANTRONIUS: I put up with books. I do not put up with Latin ones.

MAGDALA: Why?

ANTRONIUS: Because that language does not suit women.

MAGDALA: Isn't it appropriate, if a woman born in Germany learns French?

ANTRONIUS: Yeah, it sure is.

MAGDALA: Why?

ANTRONIUS: She can have a conversation with people who know French.

MAGDALA: And do you think that it is inappropriate if I learn Latin, and I have a conversation every day with so many authors, with such eloquent, such learned, such wise, such faithful advisers?

ANTRONIUS: Books wear down much of a woman's brains.

MAGDALA: How much brains you have, I do not know; I certainly would prefer to consume the little that I have in good studies, rather than in nocturnal parties, in drinking up large cups.

ANTRONIUS: I really don't want a learned wife.

MAGDALA: But I rejoice that I have a husband unlike you. For he loves me more because I am learned, who I also love on account of (his) learning.

ANTRONIUS: I hear it frequently said that a wise woman is twice stupid.

MAGDALA: Indeed, people who are stupid say that. A woman who is truly wise does not think herself wise. On the other hand, a woman who thinks herself wise is twice stupid. What do you think about the Virgin Mary? About Paula and Eustochius? They read sacred books, didn't they?

ANTRONIUS: But that is now rare.

MAGDALA: Once an ignorant abbot was rare like that; now nothing is more common. Once princes and Caesars were not less learned than powerful. Nor is a learned woman so rare as you think. There is now a pretty large number of thoroughly educated women who can hold their own with any man in the nobility. So watch out! We will run schools of theology, and we will preach in churches.
