Alexander iubet eos accendere focos plurimos.

Alexander and his Macedonian soldiers fight dragons, serpents, and other animals.

Circling around he river, at about eleven the Greek soldiers come to a lake that is as sweet as honey and then pitch camp, and Alexander orders them to slash their way into the forest around the lake, which is spacious, covering about one mile.

Alexander commands them to light many campfires. And when the moon begins to shine, suddenly scorpions come to the lake to drink. Then serpents begin to come, as well as dragons in different colors, and the whole earth resonates with their hisses. The dragons themselves have crests. Their breasts are erect, and their mouths are open. Their breath kills people, and their eyes shine with venom.

On seeing this, the soldiers get scared to death and think they will soon be dead. Then Alexander begins to comfort them, saying, "Don't worry about any of this, and just do what I do!" He quickly grabs a spear and shield and begins to fight the dragons and serpents that approach them.

Seeing this, the soldiers are greatly comforted, and seizing arms they also begin to fight them. Some kill the snakes and dragons with arms, and others with fire. Twenty soldiers die because of the dragons, as well as thirty slaves.

Then mice bigger than foxes come out of the forest and they eat the dead bodies. Bats like doves with human-like teeth fly around and they hit them in their faces and rip off the nostrils of some, and the ears of others.

As light approaches, birds big as vultures come out. They are colored red and have black feet and beaks. They do not harm the soldiers but fill up the shores and start dragging out fish and eels and then eat them up.

The Greek soldiers then leave this dangerous country and arrive in the Bactrian territories, which have gold and other riches. People there give them a kind reception, and they stay for twenty days. And they find people there who are called Chinese.

And there are trees there that drop leaves just like wool, which the same tribe collects and makes clothing from. The morale of the soldiers goes up because of the victories they get after so many calamities.
